Installing a Washing Machine Yourself – Follow These Steps for Proper Installation

What should you consider when installing a washing machine? During a move, the installation and transportation of a heavy washer can be challenging. An incorrectly installed machine can lead to leaks or even water damage. That’s why it’s essential to follow instructions or hire an experienced professional. Follow the manufacturer’s manual when installing a new washing machine.
This article explains the tools you’ll need and step-by-step instructions for a successful installation. Read Kotihandi’s tips!

Should You Install a Washing Machine Yourself?

If you're handy, you can install a washing machine yourself. It's allowed to self-install in wet areas, but it must be done carefully to avoid leaks and ensure the machine stays stable during spin cycles. Especially when installing a new washer, it’s vital to follow certain steps for safety.
Washing machines are heavy and usually require two people to move. Consider calling for carrying help. If you're unsure, turn to Kotihandi’s handyman service to ensure correct installation.
If you want to install it yourself, you’ll need:

Tools for Washing Machine Installation

  • Hose clamp for drain hose (approx. 24–40 mm)
  • Screwdriver for the hose clamp
  • Wrench for adjusting machine feet
  • Adapter (1/2” – 3/4”) between inlet hose and tap
  • Spirit level for alignment
  • Optional: Anti-vibration pads

Washing Machine Installation – 6 Steps

Once you have tools and carrying help, start the installation. Use a dolly for moving the machine. Check the manufacturer’s instructions first.

1. Anti-Vibration Pads

If placed on a slippery or sloped surface, use anti-vibration pads under the feet. These rubber pads reduce movement and noise.

2. Remove Transit Bolts

New machines have transport bolts to protect the drum. There are usually four rubber blocks secured from the back with bolts. Use a wrench to remove and save them for future moves. Not removing them can cause noise and movement.

3. Level the Machine with a Spirit Level

Once bolts are removed, place the machine. Carrying help is crucial here to adjust all feet correctly. Use a spirit level. If it’s not level, adjust the feet before tightening.

4. Tighten Feet and Check Pipes

Ensure hoses aren't pinched and are off the wall. Once level, tighten the feet’s nuts against the base. Then attach the drain and inlet hoses.

5. Connect the Hoses

Attach the drain hose to the drain connection, often under a sink. Ensure it’s at the right height to avoid constant drainage. Secure with a hose clamp (not too tight).
Connect the inlet hose to the tap with an adapter. This ensures compatible threads.

6. Do a Test Wash and Check for Leaks

After setup, do a test wash (often 90°C for new machines). Check all connections for leaks and verify the machine stays put during spinning.

Drain Hose Installation to a Trap

If your sink trap has a connection, you can use it. Add a small upward bend before the trap to prevent backflow.
No dedicated drain? Place the hose in the sink and tie it to the tap during rinsing.
